In the early 1800s the Comanche ruled the Comancheria, which included large portions of Texas and nearby states, a region covering more than 24,000 square miles. The Comanche were fierce warriors, skilled horsemen and accomplished raiders, often acquiring more tribe members by taking captives from frontier settlements, other tribes and ranches in Mexico.
In 1836 a Comanche band raided Fort Parker and took several captives including Cynthia Ann Parker, who later became Chief Peta Nocona’s wife. One of their sons, Quanah Parker, became a rancher, a railroad developer and an important statesman.
In the later 1800s the large Comanche tribe declined in size due to disease, encroachment by settlers, depletion of the bison herds, and skirmishes with the US Army and Texas Rangers. The last bands fought the cavalry in Palo Duro Canyon in 1874. The next year Quanah Parker surrendered his band at Fort Sill and a new chapter of Comanche life began.
The addendum contains twenty pages of information about the Indian Reorganization Act and the Indian Peace Commission.
